We have been looking at a series of regular folks, like you and like me, that have been captured by this Jesus we read of in the Bible. A person has captured them. Not a religion, not an institution, not a church full of brokens … but a person who has literally “STYMIED them!
Some are STYMIED in an instant. Some over time. Some in a dramatic fashion, some in the course of ordinary life.
THE IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT NOT ALL ARE STYMIED ALIKE…
BUT THEY ARE STYMEIED. CAPTURED. IMPACTED. GRIPPED BY GRACE!

Broken, uneducated in the school OF CHRIST. Fractured on the surface and right on down to the depth of the soul. Longing, but unsatisfied. Hopeful for all to go well, but then meet head-on collisions with life. Trying to please the God who is there, but always feeling they short-changed Him. Seeking a god they cannot find. Cracked-pots in 10,000 different ways, only observable to the outsiders… in desperate need. Welcome to humanity: As Freddy Mercury one said: “Being human is a condition that requires a little anesthesia.”

We have the need to be STYMIED!
Every. One. Of. Us!
And Jesus Christ – the Son of God, Savior – is the ONLY one capable of pulling off this depth of rescue.

This morning is: Nicodemus: the STYMIED in time and for eternity!
