According to a recent study by UNAIDS, LGBTQ+ people “had issues associated with their mental and emotional health in a greater proportion than the general population, with manifestations such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, etc.” The situation might have taken a turn for the worse in some cases, as the pandemic made conditions worse by “confinement in solitude or in family groups where they may experience gender violence.”

11:35am BST: Panel: COVID-19 rewind – What has been the effect of the pandemic on the LGBTQ+ community?

Finally, we’ll be sitting down with our panel to discuss the impact that COVID-19 has had on the LGBTQ+ community. COVID-19 has come to change the lives of everyone around the globe, namely in terms of how we work and how we communicate with each other. For LGBTQ+ peers who find it live as their authentic selves, such changes can naturally come with higher levels of stress and anxiety. Additionally, LGBTQ+ people are also known to suffer more from homelessness and unemployment compared to their straight counterparts, circumstances that have also been, to a certain extent, aggravated by the pandemic. We’ll be exploring the paths available to us as we recover from this.
