Talk – Fully Awake 0: Levels and Layers | 10 Noveber 2021 – FESCH.TV

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

The academic system in the UK splits an artist’s development into different levels of study, beginning with foundation level and moving through undergraduate, master’s degrees and research. The system allows students to leave and re-enter education and to experience different teaching at different institutions and within different cohorts.

How is painting taught at each of these stages? What distinguishes these different levels of education, and in what ways are they connected? Is it possible to define particular forms of teaching and learning that are appropriate to each of these stages of art education, or should they share pedagogical approaches? ‘Levels and Layers’ brings together a panel with different experiences of these levels, as both students and educators, to debate these questions from their own unique perspectives.

‘Levels and Layers’ is the fourth talk in a series hosted by Freelands Foundation to complement Fully Awake, a series of intergenerational exhibitions celebrating the practice and teaching of painting.

The panellists are:

Professor Rebecca Fortnum (Professor of Fine Art and Head of School of Fine Art, The Glasgow School of Art)
Dr Atsuhide Ito (Senior Research Fellow in School of Art, Design and Fashion, Solent University)
Tim Johnson (Lead Specialist Technician L & T Painting, CCW (Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts), UAL)
Sean Kaye (Programme Leader, Foundation Art & Design, British Higher School of Art and Design, Moscow)

The debate was chaired by our Creative Director, Henry Ward, and hosted online by Freelands Foundation.

It was followed by a Q&A session led by Henry Ward.
