TOP TEN: Fleetwood Mac

This band was formed in 1967 by guitarrist Peter Green, drummer Mick Fleetwood and guitarrist Jeremy Spencer – they tried to entice bassist John McVie to join so they named the band ‚Fleetwood Mac‘ but McVie stayed with the band Green and Fleetwood were part of before. So they hired bassist Bob Buenning as a temporary replacement. In 1968 they released their self-titled debut album and reached #4 in the UK Charts. In the meantime McVie had joined the group. The same year they released their 2nd studio album „Mr. Wonderful“. Shortly after the release the band recruited guitarrist Danny Kirwan (then 18 years young). In November 1968 they released their single „Albatross“ – which peaked at #1 in the UK Single Charts. In the following years the band changed their label and their style. Under the new label they released their next studio album „Then Play On“.

1970 Green left the band after he started having troubles with drugs. They invited Christin Perfect (now McVie as she married John McVie just a year later) to sing backup vocals and keyboards. In 1971 Spencer surprisingly left the band during a tour to join a cult so they asked Peter Green to step in as a temporary replacement. In the summer of 1971 they held auditions and after a friend of the group recommended Bob Welch they hired him. Later that year they released their next studio album „Future Games“ and six months later „Bare Trees“. In 1972 the band fired Kirwan after he became an alcoholic and destroyed band property. The line-ups changed frequently with the only constants being the McVie’s and Fleetwood. Then there was a big argument about the name and a fake Fleetwood Mac emerged before they settled and in 1974 signed a new record deal. Soon Welch would leave and the band found a replacement in Lindsey Buckingham. He agreed under the condition that his girlfriend Stevie Nicks would join too.

In 1975 they released another self-titled album and hit the jackpot: The album peaked at #1 in the US album charts and reached Top 3 in Australia and Canada. In 1977 they released their next album „Rumours“ and topped the charts in the UK, Australia, Canada and the USA among other places. The album also won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The album has since been certified Diamond in the USA (19 million albums) and sold over 40 million times worldwide. It became one of the Top Ten selling albums in the world (#8). At the end of 1979 the band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The same year they released their next album „Tusk“ which was more expiremental. After an attempt into solo albums the band released their next lp „Mirage“ in 1982. It topped the US Billboard Album Charts and reached Top 5 across the globe. Following Mirage the band went on hiatus and allowed their members to record more solo albums.

In 1987 the formation got together one more time and released the album „Tango In The Night“. It topped the UK Charts and reached Top Ten worldwide, being certified multiple platinum times in the UK (8x), Canada (5x), USA (3x) and Germany (2x). 3 singles of the album reached the Top Ten in the UK and 2 in the USA. After turmoil just before the band went on tour they released Buckingham and replaced him with Rick Vito and Billy Burnette. In 1990 they released their next studio album „Behind The Mask“ and reached #1 in the UK one more time. In 1993 the band reunited with Buckingham for the Inaugral Ball for President Bill Clinton. In 1995 the band (without Buckingham) released their next to last studio album „Time“. The band had one more album in 2003 called „Say You Will“. It peaked at #3 in the USA and #6 in the UK. By then Christine McVie had left the group. Just this year the band was back in the charts after a TikTok video used their song „Dreams“.
