VERY BEST: Rolling Stones

This group was formed in 1962 in London, UK. From the original lineup to this day still active are singer Mick Jagger, guitarrist Keith Richards and drummer Charlie Watts. Guitarrist Brian Jones, who started as the band leader died in 1969, piano-player Ian Stewart passed away 1985 and bass guitarrist Bill Wyman left the group in 1993. Today they are completed by guitarrist Ronny Wood who joined the group in 1975. They also have varying tour members with them.

In 1964 they released their first album, mostly filled with cover songs and only one original Jagger/Richards song. But the 2nd album „The Rolling Stones No.2“ released in 1965 helped achieve them their breakthrough. The lp reached #1 in the UK album charts and also charted in the Top 10 of the USA. The single „(I Can’t Get No)“ Satisfaction became an international No. 1 hit and the first charttopper for the group in the USA. The US version of the album „Out Of Our Heads“ also topped the charts in the United States. In 1966 they released their next album „Aftermath“ – the first one with only Richards/Jagger songs and peaked at #1 in the UK and #2 in the USA. In 1967 their next album „Between The Buttons“ produced another huge hit with „Ruby Tuesday“ – the lp also was successful – reaching the Top 3 in the UK and the USA. After some turbulences that saw three of the members of the band getting arrested for drug use (including Mick Jagger) they released their next album „Their Satanic Majesties Request“ at the end of 1967 – another Top 3 album for the group in the UK and the USA

In 1968 they released their next album „Beggars Banquet“ which is credited for them going back to their roots. It reached #3 in the UK and #5 in the USA. And in 1969 after Brian Jones had passed they released their final album of the sixties with „Let It Bleed“ – this one topped the UK album charts and reached #3 in the USA. Altogether they had 4 #1 albums in the UK and 1 in the USA during that timeframe.

The Seventies began with them forming their own Record label and the release of the album „Sticky Fingers“ – this album was the first to have the tongue logo on its cover and topped the UK and the US album charts. As did the next two albums – „Exile On Main St.“ and „Head Goats Soup“ – released in 1972 and 1973. In 1974 they recorded their next album „It’s Only Rock ‚N‘ Roll“ in a studio in Munich, Germany. It reached #2 in the UK and #1 in the USA. In 1975 Ronnie Wood (who then played in „The Faces“ – a group lead by Rod Stewart) came on board after then guitarrist Mick Taylor who had repaced Jones left the formation. The final 2 albums of the 70s for the Stones were released in 1976 („Black and Blue“) and in 1978 („Some Girls“) – both became #1 in the US, making it 6 #1 albums all in the 70s in the States for the band.

Their success continued in the 80s with the album „Emotional Rescue“ – another #1 in the US and the first #1 in the UK since Goats Head Soup. And their string of #1 albums in the US ended in 1981 with „Tattoo You“ – the last album to top the charts. Their next lp „Undercover“ was released in 1983 and reached #3 in the UK and #4 in the USA.

In 1989 The Rolling Stones were inducted into the American Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and Jagger and Richards set their differences aside and recorded a new album called „Steel Wheels“ – it reached the Top 3 in the UK and the USA. After a very long tour the band took a break and Wyman left the group.

In 1994 they released their next album „Voodoo Lounge“ – and reached #2 in the US and topped the UK album charts for the first time since 1980. On November 18th 1994 they became the first major recording artist to broadcast a concert over the internet. They ended the millennium with their album „Bridges To Babylon“ in 1997 – it peaked at #3 in the US and #6 in the UK.

In 2005 they released their first album of the 2000s „A Bigger Bang“ and reached #2 in the UK and #3 in the USA. And in 2016 they released their final album so far called „Blue & Lonesome“ – another #1 in the UK and Top 5 in the USA. Altogether the band has sold over 240 million records worldwide. The newest song „Living In A Ghost Town“ just topped the German Single Charts. Time for me to give you my favorite 25 songs of this legendary group. Hope you enjoy!
