We Celebrate Octavia Butler!

Today, we celebrate Octavia Butler, the genius, award-winning science-fiction writer who still inspires!

With 15 books and short story collections to her name, multiple new media deals in the making for her works, and a Mars landing site named after her, she is more than accomplished. Yet there are 3 more reasons why she inspires me.

❶ She wrote from her perspective.
Her characters, their communities, and their journeys through time and space make visible African-American women and families, culture and history, struggle and hope.

❷ She wrote with imagination.
Her creative genius combined time travel with slave narratives, integrated communities and species, and featured science in ways that prompt us to think about the sustainability of our people, systems, and environment.

❸ She wrote consistently.
To quote Octavia Butler: “Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won’t. Habit is persistence in practice.”
