The morning blues was, for many of us during lockdown life last year, an all too familiar feeling,
creating a state that can drag you down, often leading to more extreme feelings of regret, doubt and
even fear for the future.
“Lover’s Rain,” the new single by Buck Roger & the Sidetrackers, explores such spiral of thought and
somewhat like a mood swing, the song starts softly with smooth guitar chords and Buck Roger’s calm and almost narrator-like voice, guiding the listener through a grey morning of self-reflection.
Out of the so-far seemingly calm ballad comes a musical explosion of Buck Roger & the Sidetrackers’ nearest and dearest friends and colleagues including a brass quintet instead of a trio, a female choir adding power to the vocals and a string quartet that glides through the mix.
It took a total of 19 musicians to create the pulsing energy that the song exudes.
The utter drama of the song is so intense that it makes one feel it belongs as part of a film score so it should be to nobody’s surprise that the accompanying music video to “Lover’s Rain” is as cinematic as you’d expect, showing an expressively made-up cowgirl and horseback and motorbike chases. Essentially, the director duo’s (Daniel Halsall and Laura Schinzel) work comes across as a spacey, western love story. The song’s drama is progressively cranked up a notch, perhaps even too many notches, in to the realms of irony. The result is perfect harmony between song and video, providing four exciting minutes of entertainment.
At the end of the day, maybe the song can inspire a little respite from spiralling thought and the
morning blues, perhaps with a little more imagination and even a wink.

Lyrics

LOVER’S RAIN (Buck Roger)

Every day the same old story
I’m lazy I won’t wake up and I cry
for all the things I could have run
for all the things I should have done
And I’m full of sorrow

‚Cause when I see
how many times I missed my chance
I can believe,
never put a ring on a woman’s hand
And I can’t feel,
can’t feel alright in a lonely dance
Can’t feel alright without you tonight
Oh baby I’m down and out
it’s over, don’t please, don’t shout
Tomorrow, again I’m full of sorrow

Girl you can’t cage my heart
and all the habits you don’t love
So if you read my thoughts
you will know that you have to go

‚Cause when I see
how many times I missed my chance
I still believe,
never put a ring on a woman’s hand
And I can’t feel,
can’t feel alright in a lonely dance
Can’t feel alright without you tonight

‚Cause when I see
how many times I missed a chance
I do believe,
no never put a ring on a wrong girls hand
Now I can feel,
will feel alright in a lonely dance
Will be alright without you tonight
