Investigating dancing can mirror our aspirations in the wider world; further uncovering the body’s possibilities can allude to how we perceive our own more generally. I explore the body’s capacity to be more subtly articulate, the ways we find to move together, and our connections to and within all that is around us. How we mediate and move fluidly between our inner landscapes and external environments. These dances are conversations: blending/orchestrating improvised and set material in intricate and unusual fashion.
In recent years, a focus on smaller and more intimate dancing/dances has increasingly informed my solo work, with or without the use of visualized text or spoken word. This pursuit stems from and is driven at its core by the musically-related notion of the body as instrument, envisioning it as dexterous to a minute degree and infinitely expressive, and playing it as such. Conventional Western dance forms have tended to accentuate the beauty of the (moving) body very much in terms of its large and expansive quality (aiming for the grand), most often seeming to push against the limits of our physicality. The power of the miniature and the innate musicality inherent in the recurring slight shift can easily be overlooked, and I have wondered what a different approach could mean regarding other options for our self-assertion and how we share an appreciation of human movement capabilities.
While the material I tend to engage can be quite specific both in regard to my choices and how these are organized, this was an instance where I decided to unfurl a totally improvised bit of dancing. It nevertheless reflects my ongoing interest in culling from the everyday, diverging from codified dance languages, making vivid the body’s aforementioned musicality, and re-thinking how a single individual can reconceive employing moving shaped artfully to become a more vibrant conduit.
