Artist Interview – P.R.Patterson & FESCH.TV:

Established in 2012 by the New Zealand born Phillip Robert Patterson, now based in Scotland after many years in London. The foundation of Phillip’s work lies in its seamless transition back and forward from the refined confines of London to the rugged expanse and mystery of Scotland and New Zealand. This juxtaposition manifests in a distinctive aesthetic. Through garments and photography, Phillip is telling the story of his spirit which calls him back to nature and its serenity. It is a path of self-discovery and existential reflection.

Searching for an elusive place, mood and a comfort which lets the soul be at peace is always the starting point for new work and life’s evolutions that come with it. Therefore, elements directly influencing the mediums, textures, tones, ups, downs and the overall cinematic of presentation.

Phillip solely handles the creation of each garment, giving a highly skilled and personal touch to his workwear-referenced clothing. Strong shape, alternative lines, construction and manually dyed fabrics reflect his high standards for perfection, not settling for less than the pure essence of his beliefs, that can somehow never feel truly finished or let go.

The leather goods that he has become well known for, are all crafted by U.K. artisans and long-time collaborators, who imbed their own history and experience in their hand craft. This is his contribution to keeping traditional methods of artistry and authenticity alive in an all-too fast paced fashion environment.

Avoiding anything pretentious in today’s world has become increasingly difficult, however, Phillip strives to stay as true to his ethos as he possibly can. He has reached a level of his craft, where the defines himself as a “maker”, not a fashion designer. His garments are meant to be like an old friend, not a trophy. Phillip describes his life as one that “comes in stages”. His methods might have been different at times. Nevertheless, his base line has remained the same: purity of offering something back to the world.
