BENJAMIN WAYE – HOME

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

“HOME” explores the associations we have with the complex and personal experience of nostalgia. Using my grandparents‘ home in the countryside of rural Canada as a source of inspiration, I began to examine the idea of nostalgia, an emotion composed of both positive and negative feelings. “HOME” connects to my personal experiences of growing up in my grandparents house. This is where I spent much of my childhood and explored my creative voice, either through drawing or creating small objects to play with. Thus, the theme of home, identity and belonging, is investigated throughout this project.
Key components of this concept deal with the linear ideology of time. The documentation process, including found photographs of my family, between the times 1930-1965, gives a small glimpse into the past. My grandparents use these images as a tool for storytelling of memories of their youth. This process of storytelling through visual imagery has led to my personal curiosity and creative interpretations of this time. Garments found within the photographs inspire the floral and plaid prints of “HOME”, translated into modern collections of textile that reference the past but utilize the techniques of today. Each print expresses an emotional connection to the essence of the person photographed. Reiterations of these traditional textiles and prints are reimagined and abstracted, and through hand and digital textile manipulations, the marriage of past and future is realized. As a designer, artist and maker, this personal visual language is applied via the creation of textiles/fashion.
