AT3, Ao Dai v2 & FESCH.TV:

Artist Statement – Thi Bao Tran

In my video project, I explored the evolution of the Ao Dai, it’s an iconic symbol of Vietnamese culture, and I portrayed it through a series of visual narratives that blend performance art. I used multiple shots including back shots, close-ups, medium shots, and scenic views shots, which aim to capture the essence of the Ao Dai in its traditional and modern forms between Vietnam and Australia as a cultural bridge.
In here, I used the performance mode to immerse the viewer in the effectiveness and elegance of the Ao Dai. Showcasing Ao Dai’s ability to adapt and thrive in new environments. Focusing on different body types, different people, with different backgrounds, and diverse models. Scenic-view shots offer a balanced view, showcasing how the Ao Dai enhances the human form, while scenic views situate the items of costume within its natural and cultural landscape, providing context and depth to its story.
Moreover, as the Ao Dai in its way history innovative, I tried to explore the transformation of tradition to modern styles. I also reflected on the multicultural environment not only in Vietnam but also in Australia and other countries. The Ao Dai has been reimagined to suit contemporary tastes and lifestyles. Modern versions incorporate shorter hemlines, diverse fabrics, and vibrant colours, merging traditional aesthetics with modern sensibilities. This adaptation is not merely a fashion statement but an evidence of the dynamic interplay of culture and innovation.
Through my artistic lens, I connected both the traditional and modern Ao Dai, highlighting the continuity of different cultures. I also highlighted the cultural identity interference between Vietnam and Australia through the presence of the Opera House, museum, and human. In the traditional Ao Dai, with its emphasis on modesty and elegance, contrasts with the modern Ao Dai’s embrace of individuality and global influences. However, both forms celebrate the essence of Vietnamese heritage and demonstrate how culture can evolve while maintaining its core identity. I aim to create a dynamic performance through my visual presentation of the Ao Dai. I also aim to create an immersive experience that pays homage to the Ao Dai’s legacy and its ongoing transformation.
