In the vibrant, pioneering city of Shanghai, there are many internet celebrities and influencers, that is, young and fashionable girls obsessed with becoming the fashion frontline and looking every day in the most trendy outfit for beautiful internet-famous photography places. For this reason, “elderly stereotypic photography masters” (a Shanghai slang, referring to a person experienced or proficient in the photography field) and street-style photography, a postmodern culture in China, came into being. The “elderly stereotypic photography masters” often have the following characteristics: they are elderly, old-fashioned, unable to accept new things, and often with a one-sided view about things. In particular, the word “stereotypic” means that those photographers have limited subjects for shooting, “one size fits all” aesthetic style, and serious stereotypes, and the word “master” means that they love to teach others. On the Yongkang Road, an internet-famous street in Shanghai, this group of people appears to be exceptionally strong.

Uncle De, the subject of this video of mine, is among them. Nevertheless, he doesn’t have any of the aforesaid characteristics. To put it simply, he doesn’t play by the rules and always lives in his enriched spiritual world. Very often, he chats with me on the street on very diverse topics. Whether it is the field of camera aesthetics or delicious food, he seems to have a lot to say. So I decided to record with my video camera this old man who is not only lovely but also unsuspecting to strangers. It was not only because he is passionate about street-style photography, but also because he is kindhearted. As far as I know, kindness and beauty are his eternal career ethics. With a respect for everything, he has witnessed much beauty of the world which has been often overlooked or refused by the majority of people. With his freest way of thinking, Uncle De has broken through my inner defense multiple times and reached the depths of my soul.
