„A Chance to be“
This film / photographic project is inspired by the story of Lili Elbe, a biologically born man by the name of Einar Mogens Andreas Wegener, was the second person in history to undergo sexual reassignment surgery and to be identified as a transsexual woman.
Reinterpreting the story with a „different“ or rather happy ending.
Lili Elbe met Gerda Gottlieb at the Copenhagen art school, the Kunstakademiet. The two married in 1904. Both worked as illustrators: Lili specialized in landscape paintings, while Gerda worked for fashion magazines and created illustrated books. Characteristics of Lili were a marked sensitivity and interest in women’s clothing. In 1930 Lili Elbe went to Germany to undergo sexual reassignment surgery, which was still experimental at the time. After the operation, Lili died three months after the last one, or the transplant of the uterus, in order to allow Lili, then almost fifty, to be a mother.
We reinterpreted the story with a happy ending to give Lili the chance to be who she really wanted to be.
