Chapter Two: Chattanooga, TN

I recorded this song in Cloudland Canyon, about 30 minutes south of Chattanooga.

It started raining as I pulled the rig up to the campsite, and sporadic drops turned into a literal flash flood. Leaks opened up at the front of the RV and it became quickly apparent I was without a tarp.

I situated a kitchen pot on the dash to catch the ceaseless dripping.

It rained and rained and then rained some more. A torrential downpour that went on for hours. I lit some candles and started working on the song as Henry napped on the couch. We were both exhausted.

The rain finally died down enough to get a fire going and I made some lunch outside. Some progresso soup and a few grillers over the open flame.

After that Henry and I explored the canyon. It was wild and violent. Water packing itself through tight spaces and exploding into waterfalls everywhere you looked.

Some time later I took a day trip into Chattanooga and took pictures downtown. The clouds had left by then and the sky was bright blue. I procured some sealant to fix the cab leak.

Well, it still leaks a little…but it’s better..

On the way out of town we stopped and got some drone shots of the surrounding hills. Green everywhere. There were two wild roosters that came out of the woods and said hello, which Henry was excited about. Keenly interested but a gentleman about it.

A car pulled up and an older woman emerged from the passenger side with bowls of food scraps. We exchanged hello’s and conversed about the roosters. She said she wasn’t sure but thought someone had dumped them out here and they just kept surviving. She’d been coming out to feed them now and again for the last few months.

I’ve thought of them a few times since then. Those wild rooster brothers in the hills of Tennessee. Unwanted outlaws scraping at the dirt, surviving on whatever they can find, sleeping in the trees at night, drinking from the river.

Could do a lot worse, really..
