Envision how this would go if you were a captain moving to bigger boats.

When you’re ready to grow from a row boat to a sailboat, you’ll get your first assistant or „first mate“. You’re still in control but now you have help!

When you grow into a yacht, you bring even more help and now you can travel further and the food is better.

And finally when you are ready for a cruise ship, your team naturally moves with you and you add more amazing members.

We love this metaphor because it helps illustrate a few fears and lies about business we want to dispel.

The first is that if you grow, you’ll have to work even harder. A cruise ship is thousands of times bigger than a row boat, but the captain of a cruise ship doesn’t work a thousand times harder than a rowboat captain.
The truth is:

The second lie is a bit more complicated, but not understanding this breaks entrepreneurs. A small business owner may yearn to be a bigger business owner and believe that the only way they can do this is to hire better help. Yes, you need to hire amazing people but you can not fall into the trap of believing you can outsource the role of the captain of your business. Hiring the wrong „first mate“ can create intense chaos and misery and sink your business ship.
