CARBON Oracle – What haens when an AI + generative artist reinterrets the language of fashion? – FESCH.TV
FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:
CARBON Oracle answers that question, fusing artificial intelligence, generative art, and the language of fashion. The exclusive creations by digital artist JMY each depict one of 5000 unique statements generated by an AI language program trained to emulate the language of the fashion designer.
At the heart of CARBON Oracle lies a 25-year archive of interviews conducted with iconic fashion designers. Jonathan Wingfield, journalist and editor of revered fashion publication System, assembled transcripts of his interviews with designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Pierre Cardin, Virgil Abloh, Nicolas Ghesquière, Demna, Alessandro Michele, Yohji Yamamoto, Miuccia Prada, Raf Simons, and many others, and shared them with a team of researchers at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
The transcripts were fed into an AI language program, along with a challenge for the language researchers: can you teach a bot to speak like a fashion designer? Initial results ranged from the nonsensical to the eye-openingly prescient, and after several further months of fine-tuning and training, the 5000 statements – some absurd, some humorous, others surprisingly profound – were created.
These 5000 statements were then given to leading digital artist JMY to create captivating moving artworks. Inspired by magnetic energy and the circular movements it produces, the visuals show the words gradually appearing in electric fonts from a black frame, adding to the mystery of the uncanny statements.
Somewhere between parody and conceptual art, CARBON Oracle reveals the truth and beauty that hides within the seemingly random nature of AI experiments and generative digital art.
