Conceptual Kinetic Artworks as an Interior Design Commodity (2 virtual prototypes) & FESCH.TV:

Two virtual prototypes of our conceptual kinetic artworks: Rollo and Scroll (working titles)

Artwork #1: Rollo

A canvas made of wool felt in a semi-diffusive tinted plexiglas enclosure shows rows of monochrome pixels slowly changing over time. Each line of pixels is a different coloration of the same multiscale pattern, like different world views providing a set of opinions.

Just like world views can change, the rolls can turn and expose a different pattern. In a low interaction setting patterns change randomly leading to ever-changing noise on the canvas. Unbiased and free but also overwhelming in its complexity, with no consistency to hold on to.

With stronger interactions, neighboring patterns start to correlate. The canvas becomes quieter and the local coherence reveals vertical structures. At maximum interaction, these correlations diverge and only one coherent pattern survives. Low complexity, serenity, predictability, security. But also isolation and stand-still.

A distinct regime exists at which consistency and entropy coexist. Patterns can grow to dominance but with enough room for alternatives to take over. A plethora of interesting structures and dynamics can be observed in an ever-changing relationship between the patterns.
The piece allows the viewer to adjust the interaction strength and explore the different regimes over a long time and contemplate the parallels to structures and their dynamics found in real-world systems, from personal psychology to societies, to the universe.

Artwork #2: Scroll

Like an ancient scroll or a continuous print-out of a message from outer space lines fill with words in a seemingly random fashion making the impression of having the maximum information content. However, only with the first line, the seed at the beginning of time, information was created and every following line is a reversible encoding of its predecessor, not altering, adding or removing information.
Just like the history of the universe, and that of the human race being capable of communicating in written language, we see only the present and the history it results from fades away like decaying paper scrolls. Each message from the momentary present seems to be unique, however, the information encoded in them is the same; in the past, now and in the future.
The characters on the scroll do appear to exhibit some sort of correlation which might give rise to ever changing pareidolic interpretations putting the role of information content and message form into perspective.
