CURAÇÃO is about a group of artists from different backgrounds who wanted to work together and have the process as their main objective. We spent time together in very long online meetings to discuss the processes of the artists, not only involved in this project, but also talking about the struggles they have to fight to be able to access and be legitimized as mainstream art. This project is about artists who have the urgency to express what they feel, mixing different languages such as: fashion, music, performance, video, sculpture, printing, etc. The poetic narratives that come out of CURAÇÃO are ephemeral, visceral, like fire, vomit, passion, love and anger. Another important element of these artists is how they are completely involved with their own internal process and how they materialize it in an action. They are born and return to the body, as the central axis of affects. The word CURAÇÃO does not exist in Portuguese dictionaries. We invented this word, which reminds us of the word healing in Portuguese. And action in Portuguese means actions. Healing is a word that means healing with action or healing in actionMost of the members of CURAÇÃO are transgender, black and Asian artists. The Brazilian art scene is predominantly white and the result of a system that remains with „values“ and colonized practices, embedded in the fabric of Brazilian society. In our online meetings that integrated this project, the themes and issues raised by the artists were related to the challenges of everyday life, but within these difficulties emerged the most powerful poetic narratives that create different places, dimensions and languages. Our decision was to ask one of the collectives that are part of the show, Estileras, to collaborate with all other projects. Estileras has been performing live for 3 years and they have the sensitivity to understand how to stream each action. Most of these 12 artists / collectives are part of an art network and collaborate in several fashion shows, art exhibitions and commercial works for brands and magazines. No one better than themselves to communicate their actions and bodies. This was not a typical curatorial process. In this case, the artists and the curatorial team wanted to be together and create a project based on our online meetings / residencies. During these processes, we understood the paths that opened up in front of us. The construction of the program was something based on how, without prediction, each project was carried out. There were moments in the conversations when we cried, we protected ourselves, we drew a different future, we understood the desire to act close to a certain artist, because there were similar themes and feelings. That this show is about alliance, but also about picking up the fight to gain access and also to create a different system that understands and works with the issues that these artists are talking about in their live / art. In this way, HOA is paving a new way with a different structure. A gallery that has a CEO and their curators / collaborators also as artists, this shows how urgent it is the artists to be in the front line of this fight, proposing also new business models and to decolonize the art market. Hoa represents a good part of the artists of this show, this represents structural changes in the way of making and perceiving art in Brazil and in the world and this is the side we want to be on.
