About Diane’s work:
‚We are going to need a Bigger Boat‘
‚We are going to need a Bigger Boat‘ is a large-scale digital print on paper. The
work is conceptually multi-faceted. It depicts a cargo ship carrying multiple
shipping containers, each container is represented by a vibrantly coloured
pattern. Each pattern is a manipulated image formed from aerial imagery of
refugee camps across the world. From Bangladesh to Burundi to Venezuela.
Fremantle is a bustling city which harbours Western Australia’s largest and
busiest cargo port. Large cargo ships travel frequently in and out of the port
and also anchor in the harbour. I drew a connection between this
transportation of cargo and goods and the long sea voyage undertaken by
migrants fleeing their homes. Packed onto small boats by people smugglers
in unsuitable conditions, often forced to remain on deck packed in together,
treated merely as a commodity, stripping each individual of their humanity.
The title is an adaptation of a famous quote from the classic film ‚Jaws‘, which
depicts the plight of a community from the torment of a great white shark.
The use of the word ‚we‘ signifies how the refugee crisis is a world-wide issue
that needs to be combated collectively. In the circumstance of this work, we
require a bigger boat as the refugee crisis seems to be ever growing and we
need more room for more passengers on vessels as they flee their homes.
Mouth of a Shark: work by Edinburgh Printmakers and Cork Printmakers at Sample Studios Lord Mayor’s Pavilion, Fitzgerald Park, Cork City
8-31 July 2021
“No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark”
British Somali poet Warsan Shire. Artists from Edinburgh Printmakers and Cork Printmakers come together to share reflections and responses to Shire’s rallying call for refugees and their advocates, creating a new exhibition which explores humanity, and questions of what unites and divides us through their work. This exhibition explores the concepts of home and displacement with selected artists Lindy Furby, Lesley Logue, Catherine Outram and Diane Keating. It is kindly hosted by TACTIC and Sample-Studios.
Cork Printmakers, Edinburgh Printmakers and our European partners are working towards a programme of ‘Studios of Sanctuary’ for refugee and migrant artists – showcasing their work and exploring the personal stories behind the world’s refugee crisis and Europe’s responses to the global tragedy unfolding on its doorstep.
