ESC 2006 – Greg Howe – Video 6 – European Summer Campus

La prima edizione dell’ESC (European Summer Campus) si è svolta nel 2006 a Siracusa presso la sede dell’allora MCAS (Mediterranean Center for Art and Science) di Via Roma, nel cuore di Ortigia, oggi sede dell’Arcadia University.

L’mcas ha accolto per tantissimi anni studenti da ogni parte del mondo che sono venuti in Sicilia per conoscere e studiarne la cultura con le sue tantissime sfaccettature folkloristiche e artistiche.
L’Arcadia University, nata successivamente, ha la sede principale in Pennsylvania (USA) e offre dei corsi per i tanti studenti statunitensi che risiedono a Siracusa.
Proprio grazie a questa importante università, è nata nel 2015 la SCIE (Sicily Center for International Education), offrendo a tutti gli studenti stranieri una serie di corsi estivi speciali proprio sulla cultura siciliana.

Gli artisti della prima edizione sono stati Greg Howe e Carl Verheyen, mentre il contrabbassista e docente Andrea Avena si è occupato delle materie teoriche.
Le lezioni erano organizzate in sedute da dieci ore in cui si alternavano i tre musicisti, un vero tour de force dettato anche dal caldo siculo, in cui venivano trattati tecnica, approcci melodici e improvvisazione. Anche la strumentazione musicale (gear) è stata vista didatticamente e i chitarristi hanno parlato dei propri strumenti, effettistica e amplificatori dai setting personalizzati. Gli ospiti hanno portato naturalmente una strumentazione leggera „da viaggio“, ma il loro formidabile sound, particolare per ogni artista, viene dalle mani e dall’esperienza che i due chitarristi hanno cumulato negli anni. Basti solo ricordare che Greg Howe ha collaborato con Michael Jackson, Ritchie Kotzen e Justin Timberlake; Carl Verheyen è un turnista acclamato, compositore di colonne sonore, e vanta una carriera dove affiorano Supertramp, The Bee Gees, Dolly Parton e Stanley Clarke.

The first edition of the ESC (European Summer Campus) took place in 2006 in Syracuse at the head office of the former MCAS (Mediterranean Center for Art and Science) in Via Roma, in the heart of Ortigia, now home of the Arcadia University.

For many years, MCAS has welcomed students from all over the world who have come to Sicily to learn about and study Sicilian culture and its many folkloristic and artistic facets.
Arcadia University, born later, has its head office in Pennsylvania (USA) and offers courses for the many US students who reside in Syracuse. Thanks to this important university, SCIE (Sicily Center for International Education) was born in 2015, offering all foreign students a series of special summer courses about Sicilian culture.

The artists of the first edition were Greg Howe and Carl Verheyen, while the double bass player and teacher Andrea Avena dealt with theoretical subjects.
Lessons were organised in ten-hour sessions in which the three musicians alternated, a real tour de force due to the Sicilian heat. The subjects were: technique, melodic approaches and improvisation, and also the musical instrumentation (gear) has been focused in a didactic manner. The guitarists talked about their own instruments, effects and amplifiers with customised settings. The guests naturally brought a light „travel“ instrumentation, but their formidable sound, particular for each artist, comes from the hands and experience that the two guitarists have accumulated over the years. Just think that Greg Howe has collaborated with Michael Jackson, Ritchie Kotzen and Justin Timberlake; Carl Verheyen is an acclaimed session player, soundtrack composer, and boasts a career including Supertramp, The Bee Gees, Dolly Parton, and Stanley Clarke.
