Finding Freedom Official Selection #IMFFSanDiego2022

I am Brionne Olsen and I am a Smartphone Filmmaker. I shot two separate projects using my Smartphone and one of them – Finding Freedom is an official selection at the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego, CA USA and is scheduled to screen during the festival.

I am excited because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to watch my film play in front of a live studio audience. Even if I don’t win, it is still my honour to have been nominated and an opportunity for me to grow as a Mobile Filmmaker. The opportunity to network and develop my craft in the circle of likeminded Creators is priceless.

Finding Freedom is a story about a 20-something year old asking important questions about when true freedom can be realised in our time. The emancipation of women in a 21st century world. 29 years of Democracy in South Africa and the murder rate of women at the hands of their partners and spouses rose by almost 30% during the pandemic. 1in 3 of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime. It is during this time that Kyra reflects on the true nature of Freedom in her lifetime and she shares her thoughts in this powerful monologue.

Finding Freedom was shot with a Mobile phone on a zero budget. My purpose with Mobile only project is to showcase that storytelling is possible if you do not have money, you can still create a film with no money. Finding Freedom is the culmination of that idea.
