This video is a non-profit endeavor as part of the MSU CAAD Graphic Design curriculum on behalf of Professor Aubrey Pohl.

The goal of this project is to allow students to learn traditional (as well as new) tools and media under the umbrella of computing art by way of redesigning Chaka Khan’s „Like Sugar“ music video. This video was chosen due to Chaka Khan’s powerful and positive influence, her fantastic musicianship and artistry, and the overall structure of this video suited the project well (and it is an absolute groove).

Students of the Fall 2021 Intro to Computing Art Section 02 course were asked to pick from a selection of frames from the music video. Each set of frames featured a single performer dancing in repeat, taken from the clips used in the „Like Sugar“ video. Once a single still frame was chosen, students used a combination of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to recreate the frame in a completely new fashion. The goal is for the single image to stand on its own as a well composed and detailed work of digital art. Once the frames are completed, the style of each single frame was fed through Ebsynth, a relatively new software that allowed machine learning to interpret the single frame back into an animated format based on the structure of the original video. To make a note, we pushed this software to its limit, intentionally, in order produce unexpected visual results.

This overall aim of this project was to engage students in a multitude of media and tools, expose them to other creative and impactful works and figures, and create something engaging and unexpected together.
