Ian Brown, Class of 1990
FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:
About Ian.
Ian Brown attended Blue Coat during a period of great change, from uncertainties surrounding the School’s future to female students joining the Sixth Form in 1989.
Prior to undertaking his degree at The University of Sheffield in Civil and Structural Engineering, Ian embarked on a gap year to Mexico, an experience which led to travel playing a big part in his life.
Graduating in 1994 Ian enrolled in a UK training scheme, completing exams and professional training but in order to secure his first job he had to relocate to Hong Kong due to the UK’s recession. Over the course of the next eight years he developed his skills in design experience, an opportunity he feels highlights the importance of flexibility as that was “the best place to be as an engineer at that stage.”
Ian’s career highlight to date is his involvement with CrossRail, the UK’s first new underground railway in fifty years, and he can’t wait to “ride on that first train when it finally opens.”
Currently based in Saudi Arabia, Ian is an Engineering Manager working on designs for a new transportation system. A typical day involves speaking with clients, understanding their needs and getting design teams around the world to meet those needs in areas including rivers and tunnels, and to ensure everything comes together to make one transportation system.
Working on projects around the world motivates Ian to “keep on doing my best”. These essential skills which he acquired at Blue Coat means that he is organised in his approach and is always prepared and willing to keep learning.
