The collection is a celebration and collaboration with Chinese artist Tong Yang-Tze (Grace Tong). Tong one of the most influential artists of her generation, is renowned for her Chinese calligraphy in monumental scale, pushing the artform’s boundaries by engaging with three-dimensional space. Her work emphasizes calligraphy’s significance in Chinese cultural identity and how its visual and emotional impact reaches beyond linguistic barriers. Tong, at 82, will be the first Asian artist to create works for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Great Hall Commission this November. Wu explains “The central theme of the collection is timelessness that exemplifies fashion’s vital role in connecting the dots between heritage, contemporary culture, and craft. I have always championed the notion of fashion being more than clothes—it is about preserving a moment in time in a form of creative artistry.”

The influence of calligraphy was evident in the fluid silhouettes and flowing fabrics that dominated the collection. Wu incorporated these elements into prints and the overall structure of his pieces, creating a sense of movement that echoed the expressive quality of calligraphy. The collection’s palette featured soft pastels, balanced by black-and-white tones. Wu experimented with materials like canvas, silk, chiffon, and muslin, integrating both structured and fluid elements. The collection, showcased at Hudson Yards, featured an installation by Elise Co and Ben Borden, with geometric steel sculptures providing a striking backdrop to his designs. The interplay between these hard-edged structures and Wu’s soft, flowing garments set the tone for a collection focused on contrast and balance.
