New York has always been a famed shopping destination. In the 19th century, the center of the city’s retail district was known as „Ladies‘ Mile.“
On this virtual tour, we will look at the various iterations of Ladies‘ Mile over the years, from the southern anchor of A.T. Stewart’s famed Marble Palace at Chambers Street to the grand department stores on Broadway north of Union Square and on Sixth Avenue in Chelsea. The talk will focus on the history of the stores, their architecture, and some of the fashions for which NYC was famous.
