Skateboarding in Japan was once for misfits and rebels. Influenced by American fashion and street styles, pioneering punk skateboarding crew Chopper and the Osaka Daggers mimicked US peers until they crafted their own unique art form. Now kids in America are also taking inspiration from the ethos and tricks of those skaters in Japan. And as skateboarding makes its Olympic debut, the country’s home team is gunning for gold. CNN speaks with the Osaka Daggers and the Japan Olympic skateboarding team’s coach to trace skateboarding’s origins in Japan and explores how it’s gaining in popularity as it prepares to make a splash at Tokyo 2020.
