Sarnath, a few kilometers north of Varanasi in Indian Uttar Pradesh is the place where Buddha gave his first sermon. This earned Sarnath the title of holy city of Buddhism. In the centuries following Buddha’s first sermon, Sarnath flourished to the point of becoming a very important artistic, cultural and religious center. The Afghan attacks at the beginning of the 11th century put an end to the development of the city and its destruction at the end of that same century meant the end of Buddhism in India.
