SLEIGHT OF HAND: A Photo-roan – FESCH.TV
FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:
SUMMARY: This is a story of an unnamed girl who self identifies as a kleptomaniac. She muses over her obsession and recalls past memories, showcasing the lengths she would go to take another part of someone’s life. As she narrates, we soon learn of her final attempt at stealing, and where it went wrong.
2. How does your character cause effects in this film? Are there any hidden causes or effects?
The girl carries the narrative through her own words. Specifically, we see her stealing certain objects that continuously further her own ego and confidence. This brings us to the ending, in which her own confidence brings her death due to a tragic event when she is caught stealing.
3. How does a non-diegetic visual element change our understanding of the narrative?
The non-diegetic visual element can be seen in the price tags drawn on to the frame. This gives an idea of the amount of money the girl was stealing in the prime of her kleptomania.
4. How did you meaningfully rearrange the plot’s temporal order?
With the narration, I wanted to attempt arranging the plot in a freewheeling sort of fashion. We see events rapidly jump across the screen depending on the themes of her dialogue. She recalls certain events that she is reminded of on the spot. At the end, we see the final heist she goes on. It seemed right to end it on a chronological note, her demise, due to the chaos of storytelling found before it.
5. How does your film demonstrably move from restricted to unrestricted narration? Why did you do this?
The omnipresent narration by the girl is because she is dead. She is able to tell us facts or effects about certain memories that we are not able to see visually. Specifically, she is able to alert us of her own death moments before it happens. This felt interesting to me due to the way it sounded like someone reminiscing on life, telling random stories that may appear to be unconnected, but all add up to this cosmic idea.
