Meta-Moth-Osis is an exploratory project looking into the utilisation of waste streams within already present and harmful industries.
Sericin is a protein found within silk; when the boiling of silk takes place, the protein is dissolved into the water and discarded as sewage.
Sericin demands a high oxygen consumption to be broken down, contributing to environmental pollution (Çapar, G. et al., 2022).
Meta-Moth-Osis explores the employment of sericin in the biomaterials industry and the properties this underutilised protein can provide. Initial research into the protein suggests antibacterial, anti fungal and UV-protective properties to be explored with exponential applications(Mondal,2017).
Furthermore, approaching this project with a background in fashion and a strong interest in garments with multiple purposes, it felt appropriate to tailor the biomaterial to fit my interests. This led to the creation of thoughtful garments combining traditional silk with the new bioplastic, that can metamorphosise into a secondary form before composting completely.
