The Conteorary Male Vietnaese Ao Dai and Laotian Pha Biang – FESCH.TV

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

Happy Day Five of APAHM’s Cultural Fashion Display! Today we have Phillip, a fourth year student modeling a contemporary tunic inspired by the masculine Vietnamese Ao Dai (tunic and trousers). Historically, the colorful masculine Ao Dais paired with a Non La (traditional hats) were reserved for royalty and low-ranking officials were only allowed to wear blue. Overall, commoner clothing was simple and featured a mandarin, high collar. The traditional masculine Ao Dai continues to inspire western fashion in tunics such as this.

Phillip can also be seen modeling a traditional Pha Biang. The Pha Biang is a shawl-like garment worn by both Laotian men and women. It is a long piece of silk with intricate, significant patterns about a foot wide and draped diagonally around the chest to cover one shoulder. The ends of a Pha Biang will also drop behind the back. Today, the Pha Biang will often be worn with Salong, special silk pants for celebrations.
