The Swimming Pool Sessions

Sometimes, you have those moments where you cannot resist the urge to be creative and go out and shoot something, regardless if it’s a success or failure. This was one of those nights, and I was really lucky to be joined by a group of freediving friends who kindly helped me out by modelling in my backyard pool during a night off.
My first model was Astrid Holler, an old friend from high school who is one of the most accomplished fashion models I’ve ever met. Watching her be so comfortable and fluid in the water was nothing short of hypnotising. At first, we were doing a fairly simple shoot – plain light, normal swimwear, middle of the pool – but halfway through, I switched the lights to infrared mode to make it even moodier. The result was something I definitely want to try again!
My second model was another friend and dive buddy, Isa. I’ve always wanted to try shoot with clothing (rather than wetsuits and swimsuits) underwater and explore that fantastical, surreal element. Fortunately, Isa brought a stunning white dress that – combined with her long brunette hair – really brought out that Greek goddess look. Isa’s experience as an underwater model clearly showed in the way she moved and posed underwater. It’s rare to see someone so naturally talented at their craft, you rarely have to give direction.
I also wanted to see whether it was possible to “black out” the pool with the use of lighting and camera settings rather than a huge black cloth. By this point, I had been in the water for two hours, and had finally figured out what the best lighting options were – it was so satisfying to finally see the magic come together at the last minute.
