Hermes (The Temple of Hermes) is a mobile immersive media soundscape app. The app contains intricately programmed layers of contemporary music, poetry and prose. You download the app (AS OF MAY 2021 RE-LAUNCH DELAYED DUE TO COVID – SORRY!), go to Hamworthy Park in Poole, open the app, put headphones on, then literally walk around the park to access the experience. The sound changes as you move around the park, depending on where you are. Play with the sounds and find out what they do as you, for example, turn round and round on the spot or track a particular sound you find interesting! Satsymph have produced this soundscape specially for Hamworthy Park. It will play only in Hamworthy Park and nowhere else. Look at your screen if you want to see the actual soundpools on the map, or just stick your phone in your pocket and explore with your ears. It’s interactive – it changes as you move and turn, or you can follow a particular sound you find interesting, so be adventurous and explore the whole of the park!

The work’s theme is Hermes, traditionally messenger of the gods, guide to the Underworld, patron of thieves and liars, of literature and poets, as well as of boundaries and those who, as in this work, “travel across them”. In other words, a bit of a trickster!

The app is free to use and you don’t need a phone signal after downloading – just GPS.

Hermes‘ is a 2020 remake of the original ‘On a Theme of Hermes’ (2012) using the same sound material. The remake is kindly supported by BCP Council.
