„Schmatta“ in Yiddish means ‚rags‘ and Jewish immigrants from all over the world landed in Miami along with Latin American people who also joined the garment factories of Wynwood’s Garment District. Later refugees from wars in the Middle East and eventually Korean investors developed projects in Wynwood with elder tailors opening small shops across the city. The fashion industry rose and fell with the arrival of Versace in the 1990’s to Miami Beach and the American Dream still looms large in this Miami immigrant industry now in a state of flux.
