We finish with Tom Glavine, here on „Inside the Game“ brought to you by flexxCOACH and flexxCOACH VR. We talk about youth sports and coaching his kids. He started coaching his kids in hockey and then he went to baseball. Tom really enjoyed his time with kids. For him it was more about getting to spend extra time with them coaching them. Parents would ask him for advice for their kids and he would tell them certain things. When a parent would ask him about playing at the next level he would know what they meant but he would ask back, what if high school is the next level, are you okay with that.
When he was coaching hockey he would tell them the odds were against the kids coming from the southeast. They would go to play in Chicago and Boston in tournaments and parents could not believe how good some of the 11 and 12 year olds were.
One thing he stresses is get the FUN back in playing sports. It is not a job. It is to be enjoyed.
Tom also tells how practice is more important than games. Kids get tired of the travel during a season and they get bored with games. Sometimes they just want to go to the field and play and practice.
We get into the discussion of his son Payton and how he wound up at Auburn. He did not want to pitch in high school but Tom saw something in him when he was 13 years old and would have a catch with him. Told him he could pitch and he just wanted to play the outfield. Payton’s junior year of high school he made varsity as a pitcher. It is a great story to listen to how it all came together for his son.
