VERY BEST: Destiny’s Child
This group was formed in the early 90s when Beyonce Knowles met rapper LaTavia Roberson while she auditioned for a girl group. In 1992 Kelly Rowland joined them and in 1993 LeToya Luckett replaced two original members. First they were named Girl’s Tyme, before they changed their name and finally settled on Destiny’s Child in 1996. The name most likely originated from a 1967 Waylon Jenning song. In 1997 they released their debut single „No, No, No“ from their self-titled debut album. It was the remix with Wyclef Jean that propelled the group up to #3 of the US Billboard Single Charts. The album was released in 1998 and charted in the USA and the UK, where it went into the Top 50.
In 1999 the group released their next album „The Writing’s On The Wall“ – it became their breakthrough lp and reached #5 in the USA and Canada, #10 in the UK and #2 in Australia. Two singles of the album („Bills, Bills Bills“ and „Say My Name“) topped the US Hot 100 Billboard Single Charts. A 3rd („Jumpin‘ Jumpin'“) reached #3. The songs were also a success in the UK and Europe, as well as in Australia and Canada among other places. Roberson and Luckett were then replaced by Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. But Franklin soon quit and the trio of Beyonce, Michelle and Kelly Rowland were now Destiny’s Child. In 2000 they released the single „Independent Women, Pt. I‘ – the title track for the ‚Charlie’s Angels‘ movie. It became their 3rd #1 single in the USA and their first in the UK. The group then won 2 Grammy Awards for „Say My Name“.
In 2001 they released their 3rd studio album „Survivor“, which topped the US album charts immediately. It also reached #1 in the UK, Germany and Canada among other places. The single „Bootylicious“ became their 4th #1 single in the USA, while „Survivor“ topped the UK Single Charts. After the members tried their hands in solo efforts with good to great success they came back together in 2004 for a final album: „Destiny Fulfilled“ was released at the end of the year and peaked at #2 in the USA and #5 in the UK. One year later they released a Greatest Hits album before they disbanded and went their solo ways.
