Violet Vale – FESCH.TV

Violet Vale & FESCH.TV:

Violet Vale is an ad-lib short film I shot with some friends in just a few hours one evening. While I had scripted scenes and character motivations, all dialogue was improvised and restructured in the edit to create something of cute and humorous story of a Tinder date.

The inspiration for this was originally conceived from the film Blue Valentine. In film school in 2011 my friend wanted to shoot his thesis with the same concept which was not only a lot of fun to make but was also received very well by our tutors and peers as it delved deep into the film making experience. 12 years later I decided to take this concept and play with it once more with the knowledge and experience I’ve gained from working in the industry since.

I had two goals in creating this short film. Firstly to experiment with film making principles and ideas such as shooting in a run and gun fashion to maintain the improv energy, crossing the line, shooting two cameras with only 50mm lenses and using mostly available lighting and creating fill for colour contrast.

The second and most important goal was simply to get together a small team of people (3 crew, 2 cast), get out there and have a go at shooting a film with no expectations of how it might turn out. I didn’t care about submitting to film festivals or trying to share it with the world, I only wanted to make connections with other local film makers and to create a learning experience purely for the love of our craft.
