Fish migration river in Afsluitdijk is the ecological solution for future marine engineering projects in similar situations.

For the renovation of the famous Afsluitdijk a solution had to be found for the migration of fish from the salty Waddenzee to the fresh water IJsselmeer.
With the development of the fish migration river, migratory fish can travel to and from salt- and fresh water areas to grow up and reproduce in whenever they want.
The solution is a 4km winding river which sheds fresh water to the salty Waddenzee during low tide with which it lures fish to the entrance. The river is always open unless there is a problem with water safety, in which case the storm surge barrier in the Afsluitdijk will be closed.
As the first in it’s kind the fish migration river can be of major importance for other marine engineering projects in similar situations.
